Many SEO practitioners currently use Ahrefs to hunt for domains. Ahrefs can help them check expired domains: domains that were previously registered but whose owners did not renew them for some reason, leaving them available for a certain period. At that point, anyone can register them. Many SEO practitioners choose to buy old expired domains because they have many quality backlinks, especially domains with high Moz DA and PA or TF, CF, DR, and UR metrics. If SEO practitioners use and develop these domains properly, their websites' rankings can improve. 2. What is a PBN? As mentioned, you can use Ahrefs to find domains for building a PBN. So what is a PBN? It stands for Private Blog Network. The concept is not new to SEO practitioners in general or in Vietnam. Simply put, a PBN consists of websites that SEO practitioners use to send links to a main site in order to push one or more keywords to the top of Google. There are currently two common types of PBN domains: - PBN auction (Public): You must participate in an auction to obtain this type. It is relatively expensive, usually over 30 USD excluding one year's renewal and other charges. Generally, you need to spend at least over 60 USD for a decent one. - Expired domain (Buy now): You can buy this type at any time and only need to pay the domain renewal cost. These domains are available, but there are few of them and finding them is time-consuming. Besides these two main types, there are other auctioned and transferred domains. 3. How to hunt for domains using Ahrefs 3.1. Preparation To hunt for domains with Ahrefs, you need: - 01 Ahrefs pro account - 03 browser tabs open 3.2. Hunting for domains using Ahrefs To find domains with Ahrefs, look through broken links on large, reputable websites such as yellow pages, directories, and news sites. For example, if you work in tourism and want to build a PBN of travel websites, you can search for quality expired domains in your field using phrases such as: - Famous travel websites around the world - Travel magazines - Travel blogs - … You can come up with search keywords depending on how you want to build content for the websites later. Or, if you work in interior design, you can search for phrases such as: - Famous interior design websites - Interior design magazines - Interior design blogs - Interior design blogs Below are some fairly well-known interior design domains with ideal SEO metrics: - designboom.com - dezeen.com - archdaily.com To explain the Ahrefs domain-hunting process in more detail, we will use archidaily.com as an example. - First, click broken links at the bottom left of the screen. You will see information about the domain's broken links. Specifically, it has more than about 7k broken links. - Click Export -> Full export -> Start export to download the list of links. - Open the downloaded file, copy all content in the link URL column, and paste it into tab 1 that you opened during preparation. - Next, click TRIM TO ROOT -> REMOVE DUPLICATE URLS -> REMOVE DUPLICATE DOMAIN in order. - Copy the links filtered in tab 1 to tab 2 and click SEARCH; you can obtain 276 domains available for immediate registration. - Download these 276 domains and paste them into the Ahrefs.com Batch Analysis page in tab 3. Next, use the displayed domain metrics and your established domain quality criteria to filter for the domains you need. 4. Notes on hunting for expired domains Hunting for domains with Ahrefs is not difficult and costs relatively little. However, when using this method, carefully check the domain's history at https://archive.org/web. If the domain previously hosted unhealthy content or underwent a 301 redirect, transfer, or similar change, you should not choose it. You should treat expired domains only as an additional source of links and not rely on them too heavily, because they are a gamble and buying them does not always produce the desired results.
