Frequently asked questions about the Latin alphabet:
1. Is an apostrophe needed if we write Я as JA?
2. Should the letter "Я" and similar letters be represented in two ways (ja - ia or ja - 'a)?
My answer:
An apostrophe is needed.
I considered using different representations for Я (as ЬА and ЙА) and rejected the idea. First, there is simply no need. Second, if we write "ця" as "c'a" instead of "cja",
"s'omga" instead of "sjomga",
"zl'us'a" instead of "zljusja",
then:
1. There will be tens of times more words with an apostrophe, because words with iotated and softened sounds are tens of times more numerous than words with an apostrophe.
2. Reading and writing will become more difficult.
3. Typing will become slower. The marks slow it down.
4. The text will simply look terrible.
If instead we write "ця" as
"cia" instead of "cja"
"siomga" instead of "sjomga"
"zliusia" instead of "zljusja",
then:
1. The words klaviatura, funkcional, avianosec', proviant, dializ and others become клавятура, функцёнал, авяносець, провянт, дяліз and so on.
2. New spelling rules are added.
3. People will often read IA (іа), rather than JA (я), making it less intuitive.
In my alphabet there is only one rule for the apostrophe:
between a consonant and "J", the apostrophe separates them; in all other cases it softens the sound.
That's all. Simple.
⌨️ You can write in this alphabet:
1. On a smartphone:
For Android - choose an English QWERTY keyboard (or Esperanto), then hold down S, Z, C or G to find Š, Ž, Č and Ĝ.
Or install GBoard + a Latin QWERTY keyboard.
For iPhone - use SwiftKey Keyboard + Esperanto.
2. On a Windows PC - you can create a layout yourself using "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator".
Explore the Croatian or Slovenian alphabet and try reading in it.
